Vivre la Difference!

February 07, 2004

I was asleep at 3:30 am when the election results were announced at Wilf’s, so I only got to savour my political victory late in the morning. Wow … it took three years of cunning persistence and two unsuccessful political campaigns, but it looks as though I’ll finally get the chance to dismantle the Students’ Union.

Two years ago when I first ran for the Board of Directors, I complained that the Union repeatedly failed to represent student interests and demanded a complete overhaul of the representation structure. I lost the election by using satire and dangerous words to convey my ideas.

But this year, everyone’s passionate about overhauling the political system. In the open forum all the candidates spoke about reform and openness. Even Steve Welker, the president-elect, spoke passionately about a bi-cameral system and the recommendations made by Sean Geobey two years ago.

It looks as though the current system will be dismantled by the end of the year, and in its place we’ll have a more democratic and representative structure. I’m excited about the possibility of change.

And I’m also excited that I won’t be the only one pushing for something better. Five of my fellow conspirators did amazingly well in this election, and all will be changed, changed utterly … a terrible beauty is born.

And now that the campaign is over, I need to thank the following people who made everything possible: Mike Borrelli, Trevor Haldenby, Fraser King, Heather Taylor, Anthony Piscitelli, Jason Shim, David Wellhauser, Lindsay Markle, Shrish Dave, and all the other terribly beautiful people in my life.

Congratulations, Tudor. This year will be an interesting one, full of ideas and action. Get inside to tear it up, my friend.

Don’t thank me, I did shit all, you’re the one who ran the spectacular campaign! I look forward to seeing how this works out, I have a lot more hope for this year that for last! Remember, let the blood of the bourgeoisie run through the streets!!!

This year’s election photos are up on ClubLaurier (as are the 2003 pics).

As a side note, on Monday I’m printing a limited set of my election posters, and if you’d like an autographed poster please let me know ;).

And Mike, your organizational skills made lovely things possible ;).

Lindsay Markle a supporter of good ole’ Tudor?

Posted by: Deon on February 13, 2004 at 09:04 PM

Lindsay is one amazing woman — we both ran for prez last year and along the way I grew to respect her and her views. She’s an excellent friend who has a lot of insight.

As far as political support goes, she’s in Ireland so she’s not exactly involved in WLUSU politics, but talking with her is always good.
