Recording Truth Truly

April 29, 2004

I started reading Miller’s Tropic of Cancer (oh, what a seductively joyous book it is!), which is staggeringly prefaced with the following quote by Emerson:

These novels will give way, by and by, to diaries or autobiographies — captivating books, if only a man knew how to choose among what he calls his experiences that which is really his experience, and how to record truth truly.

Yes, Emerson prophesied blogging, if only bloggers could choose their real experiences and record them truthfully!

If only, hmm?
Whatever you say, You Romantically Hyperbolic “ORGY OF SLANDER.”

An orgy of slander in the same way Cancer is not a book, it is:

“libel, slander, defamation of character. [It] is not a book, in the ordinary sense of the word. No, [it] is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of art, a kick in the pants to god, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty … what you will.”

Ah, how lovely are all these prolonged insults and orgasmic feasts of slander!
