May Day

May 01, 2004

I got out of bed this morning and quietly took over the campus media. After brushing my teeth I infiltrated the student government too. This May Day I officially assumed my dual role as Editor-in-Chief of ClubLaurier and student representative, awkwardly combining journalism and politics. I went by the WLUSU offices to spread the good news, and waved to Steve Welker.

“We were just reading your blog,” he said.

“That is not a blog but an orgy of slander,” I wanted to shout, but instead I laughed and went out into the sunshine. The weather wasn’t nearly as shitty as I anticipated, so I decided to bike to St. Jacobs. I didn’t particularly want to go there, but I felt the urge to leave the city and St. Jacobs was sufficiently far. It was also swarming with tourists by the time I arrived, nosy men and women who crowded every store in search of antique cutlery and wooden brooms.

St. Jacobs is not a village, but a mall masquerading as a village, so I can’t bare to go there more than twice a year. The used bookstore was surprisingly empty, but all those volumes of unread, unwanted writing made me overwhelmingly sad. I left with a copy of Fitzgerald (whom I’ve never read before) and $5 in change (which will have to last me for the rest of the summer).

Would you be talking about F. Scott Fitzgerald? My favorite author.

^^^ Yes, him! I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t read anything by him (yet).
