GMail
May 19, 2004
This morning I became desperate and started offering handjobs in exchange for a GMail account. GMail is Google’s promise to revolutionize the email industry, and I craved an account since April when the service was first announced. Because GMail is still undergoing beta testing, accounts are hellishly hard to come by, so much so that some people are willing to offer money, hugs, or handjobs for GMail.
But nobody took me up on my offer.
So I took matters into my own hands and logged into Blogger, which allowed me to create my own GMail account via a nifty link in the margin. To get the account, I agreed to let Google scan all my emails and deliver appropriate ads. I had no qualms doing so. For some reason privacy is not my main concern — in a postmodern world there are no more secrets.
And now everyone can email me. Do it — send me love notes, offers to enlarge my penis, my breasts, and IQ! Send me anything. Write to me if you’re Nigerian and need help transfering vast fortunes, or if you know girls who like horse cocks. Yes, I want spam in my email daily.
I also want to test GMail’s robustness by seeing how well it handles spam. And speaking of handling, I’ll have to deliver a handjob to the person who got me the account — me!

Posted by: Fraser M on May 20, 2004 at 01:30 AMApparently, only “active” bloggers get the offer. Here’s how to check.
I guess some of you have to go back to offering handjobs in exchange for an account. I can’t invite anyone yet, but I’ll be sure to help you out when the situation changes.
Posted by: Tudor on May 20, 2004 at 02:19 PMI have a GMail account! And I did it legitimately too! Bwahaha.

Posted by: zephyr on May 28, 2004 at 12:58 PMNope, no invites yet. Soon I’ll have to offer to blow Google in exchange for some invites. (And no, I’m not sure why I have this constant desire to prostitute myself for Google.)
Posted by: Tudor on May 28, 2004 at 01:04 PMHeas to my site, i have about 6 invites for anyone that wants it. Just comment in then entry that offers invites.

Posted by: adam on June 28, 2004 at 08:42 PMGoogle is intentionally keeping gmail in beta for the publicity. Millions of *lucky* peeps have accounts already. Has the rest of the world gone blind?
Posted by: anon on October 29, 2004 at 06:50 AMYou’re partially correct. Google is keeping it beta partially for publicity, partially because the service still lacks some features. Two months ago there were still many missing features (even simple things like the ability of adding a signature to outgoing mail). I think they want to offer a full set of features befor they release the program to the general public.
Also, Gmail servers seem to be under a lot of strain (they’re often unavailable). Thus, I think Google is also trying to work out the scaling issues before a public release of Gmail.
