Buy Nothing Day
November 26, 2004

Heather and I drank three cups of coffee Monday afternoon while waving fists in a heated debate about careers. I told her I wanted a job that would allow me to disappear for two months each year into the warm belly of Canada. She told me she wanted a job that pays well so she could buy things. “Buying things make me happy,” she said; I told her that exploitation makes me sad.
We argued. She’s still a capitalist; I’m not. That’s why today I celebrated buy nothing day in the concourse and she didn’t. I think she missed out — BND at Laurier was better than ever, featuring knitters, coffee, screeching, and lectures. Here are the highlights:
- Dr. Millerd talked about the economic consequences of overconsumption.
- Dean Campbell argued that pressures to consume negatively impact students’ lives.
- Richard Walsh-Bowers screeched twice.
- Someone promised we’ll all die in horrible ways.
- Laura decided to knit a scarf to celebrate the occasion.
- The chili was good.
Today I bought nothing and was happy. Nicole jumped on my back and we ran through the concourse kicking people; that too made me incredibly happy.

Posted by: regan on November 27, 2004 at 11:28 PMThose hands are goddamn fascinating — thank you for posing! And thank you Greg for pointing out that chili ain’t chilly (silly homophones).
Posted by: Tudor on November 28, 2004 at 12:41 AMHow chilly would chili from Chile be, though? The mind boggles.

Posted by: ikabod on November 29, 2004 at 12:59 AMDid people really say that you guys would die in terrible ways? Honestly that’s awful!! Who would say that?
Oh Tudor it was nice to see you at the parade; hope you got lots of good pictures of cops and street garbage!
Buy Nothing Day is great…. I’d love it even more if I could just get Tre on the bandwagon.
At any rate, if you are into Buy Nothing Day, you might also be interested in the Freecycle organization (of which I run the K-W / Midwest Ontario group). If you want to know more about it, email me and I’ll send you the links.
Oh, and thanks for stopping by Orderly Randomness.
Posted by: TresWife on December 09, 2004 at 12:23 PMYes, do get Tre on the BND wagon of goodness.
And thanks for telling me about Freecycle — from what I’ve read on the website it does sound like a neat program.
