Smoking on Campus
April 15, 2005

Laurier wants to banish smokers from campus. Apparently, the existing smoking policy doesn’t work, but instead of experimenting with other alternatives the administration is trying to ban puffing outright. While other universities created special smoking bunkers, Laurier is all about draconian measures.
Banning smoking will not only create safety issues (frosh will be forced to go off-campus if they want to smoke at night), but it also unnecessarily inconveniences smokers for the sake of some ultra-puritan bullshit.
Smokers are really nice people — there’s no need to hunt them out of existence. And lung cancer is sexy. It’s nice that Laurier cares about people’s lungs but it would be nicer if everybody loosened up for once. If you’re a Laurier student, vote no to keep smokers on campus.

A campus-wide smoking ban is ridiculous, I’m really curious as to who’s spearheading that. You’d think this would be the sort of thing that even the vehement and sign-waving anti-nicotiners would be a little befuddled by.
Abruptly stop one habit by encouraging another - psychopathic rage! Not a good plan.
Posted by: Trevor on April 15, 2005 at 05:36 PMEven though I usually do not approve of draconian measures for any reason, as someone who is currently suffering from some respiratory plague, plus asthma, I can see the point of banning smoking. I used to smoke when I was young(er), and I could not understand what the fuss was all about until I developed a bronchitis condition and asthma everytime I caught a fucking cold. Last night, I inadvertently walked through someone’s cloud of smoke outside a bookstore and nearly coughed up a lung and peed my pants at the same time. Note to self: Must pick up some Depends….
Posted by: jules on April 15, 2005 at 06:03 PMthis is to jules manily.. there are other alternatives.. and ive stressed this many times. create smoking shelters. as a smoker i can tell yu among outselves we are usually social people and having a place where everyone goes to smoke is benificial.. also it gives us protection from the wind and rain and snow, which is why most people smoke places that are near buildings. banning smoking on laurier property is jsut going to cause problems with the local people around the school and withthe poliece.. my highschool tried to do the same thing it only worked for a couple months when it was then reversed due to neighbours to the school and the drivers of the cars that were passing by calling in to the school to complain about the smokers near the road and on their property. also with all the litter of ciggarett buts its gonan get pretty bad.. those little pylon ashtrays were a decent idea… but if you put smoking shelters up with those things permantly attached then you wont have to worry about the mess as well..

DON’t SMOKE
p.s
TUDOR. do you not find it absoultey facinating that within 4 hours you have had minimum 4 people ( the above three, and myself ) viewing your blog? you are part of peoples daily agendas!!! mine for sure.
you are a legend already, graduating or graduating. your spirit won’t be missed rather than payed foward, as you’ve instilled it in all of us not even being aware. thats called…. subconsious modesty? such a free spirit deserves to be liberated!!!! after 7 fucking years of sharing your beauty with the laurier community (and even people who are not part of it - on this blog)
moving on to a different chapter may be edgy espechially if you don’t know what chapter you were on, to know which chapter your turning to, but like any good book; whatever chapter comes next, it just keeps getting better and better. laurier was just the preface.
smoking is just silly, but so is banning it from skewl property. implementing binary cause and effect solutions rarely if ever solve the problems they are created for, but bureaucrats function that way. so provided they are off skool property, light them on fire. no harm, no foul, all fun.
Posted by: Simon Belmont on April 15, 2005 at 10:14 PMgee, helen, you’re too sweet, but it’s only been six years — keep talking like that and I’ll be tempted to come back for a seventh.
As for smoking, I see things the same way as Mike: perhaps there are smarter ways of dealing with the problem. But I do appreciate that some people may piss their pants when passing through a cloud of smoke (heheh — thanks for the story, Jules).
And Trevor darling, you’re Captain Nicotine and more (after all, you got me started on the whole smoking thing … hehehe). As far as I know, the university secretary, Ms. Marilyn Jacobs, is spearheading the effort. She’s also the Harassment/Discrimination Co-ordinator, so I guess that harassing smokers is part of her portfolio.
Posted by: Tudor on April 16, 2005 at 11:14 AMLet me restate my opinion on this: I agree there SHOULD be separate smoking areas, or *bunkers* as Tudor calls them. I just wanted smoking banned at that particular moment I almost hacked up a lung and pissed my pants. Although smoking in a bunker would be really unappealing, didn’t Hitler spend his last days in a bunker? ACK! Well, off I go to take a few hits off of my inhaler. :(

Posted by: Tudor on April 17, 2005 at 02:00 AMI’m not sure where I stand on the smoking ban, but what I do know for certain is that the smoking ban referrendum is illegitimate.
Running a question with relatively little publicity, on-line, during exams is either a) accidentally stupid or b) a concious attempt to reduce student participation. People have other things on their minds and are too busy to notice this.
Couldn’t they have run this as a referrendum question during the WLUSU elections (at least for students, then run the staff/faculty vote this way)?
Posted by: Greg on April 18, 2005 at 12:56 PMWonderful point, Greg! I like the conspiracy talk — I don’t think anybody is that stupid unless it is on purpose.
