All That Jazz

July 09, 2005

By the time I returned to the Jazz Festival at 8 o’clock in the evening, the crowd expanded to the adjacent parking lot and the six black men on stage were feeling the music. Earlier in the day the scene was dead, but now I had to elbow grannies aside to get closer to the stage. The effort was worth it — I managed to snag a seat in the front row.

I was happily photographing the intensity on stage, lost in sound, when a suspicious fellow approached me. “I’m Martin,” he said, “and I’ve been living your life for quite a while.” I didn’t know what to say so I asked him to have a seat. “I’ve been reading your blog,” he explained. He told me I have a fan club somewhere.

The Jazz made everything all right. The trio on stage made us shiver and birds flew over us in the evening sky.

So many birds,” I said.

And later, after the last note echoed into the night, we headed to the Heuther for cake and beer. I told him that my dreams are more disturbing than my daily life. “I dream about raping men in prisons at knifepoint.” Martin nodded understandingly while chewing faster.

We said goodbye in the street and he invited me to appear on his radio show (Tuesdays at 10 pm). “We often do weird stories about sex with dolphins and such,” he said. I’m going to be famous!

Update: there were a shitload of photographers with impressive cameras at the festival. You can see some of the pictures they took here and here. And you can see my pictures here.

Oh wow, that’s awesome - now I really wish I could have stayed for evening Jazz. You finally got to meet a member of your fan club! How amazing. And radio? Does this Martin fella really know what he’s got himself into? Oh, this’ll be fun. Great stuff. Ha!

(and p.s. - referring to your previous post about raping men in prisons and having people barge in to remember - yeah, there’s no way I’m doing that. First, I’m lazy and when I’m sleeping, I’m a sleepin’. Also because I can’t even remember my own dreams, [save the ones involving a twist of fate [and genitalia], and life long prison sentences locked in a cell with a horny foreigner wielding a sharp knife], I won’t be much help. Dreams are usually pretty crappy anyways. Good luck with that. ;)

I find it hard to believe I’m the first of his fan club to come forward. :) And I’m genuinely hopeful I’ve gotten myself into more than I bargained for. *chuckle*

Martin’s show airs every Tuesday from 10PM to midnight on CKMS-FM 100.3 (UW’s radio station). It is called “Random Green Dots” and I’ve been assured it is more shocking than the show that’s on the air right before — “The World of Chamber Music.”

You can tune in or listen to the webcast. I’ll be talking about birds.

Your dream of raping men is hillarious! You should commit a crime and find out if it can be made reality!

You don’t make a life of crime sound particularly appealing, Pablo.

And yes, my photos from the festival are now on flickr.

Tudor - we have to meet before Hillside, so it’s not totally weird or anything. Thursday?

I’d listen in to your CKMS debut, but I’ll be playing baseball that night… that and the Tuesday CKMS lineup has too much of my ex-girlfriend for one to handle (4 hours!)

Actually, I found your site through Martin, too(: Post when you’re going to be on-air… I’d like to hear that interview, too. I may even stay up for once to hear Maritn’s show. I’ve been meaning to for a while…
