Birth and A Little Death
August 24, 2005
It was my birthday yesterday, and I didn’t just feel older, I felt positively decayed. My parents brought back savage infections from Old Europe (I now blame everything on them), which made my throat ache, my head hurt, and my eyeballs itch uncontrollably. Once or thrice I felt like yanking them out of my skull.
“When my eyeballs hurt, I sometimes lick them to make them feel better,” I told Laura. She was mildly disgusted by the way I apply saliva to different parts of my body. “Meh, it’s a Jesus thing,” I said.
My flesh no longer felt putrid late in the evening when Laura came by to feed me spaghetti and give me provocative self-portraits I don’t dare display around my house. The thought of her pictures kept me hard all the way to Stratford where we watched musicals, clapped hands, shivered in the dark, and fell silent by the side of the lake.
“I didn’t think I’ll miss you like this,” she said. In two days she’s fleeing the city and wants to take me with her. We were quiet for a long time and the darkness around us was filled with tears.

Posted by: spindriftdancer on August 25, 2005 at 09:17 AMhappy retrospective birthday… I’ve found that if you have a bad birthday one year, the next will usually be amazing. only 363 days till then!
Posted by: Chris on August 25, 2005 at 11:26 AMJesus, was it that bad?? And I thought you said you liked the play. People are going to start to think I make you cry all the time (including me). Oh, and thanks for the cold ;).
Posted by: Laura on August 25, 2005 at 03:46 PMDamn, that sucks being sick on your birthday! Happy belated anyway.
Everytime I travel abroad, I come down with some kind of plague. I think it’s the shitty recycled air on the plane and sitting next to all those mouth-breathing cretins.
Get well soon!

Posted by: Ponzi on August 26, 2005 at 02:10 AMI had no choice our paths were different…
My eyes still get wet when I think of that last night when we said bye without words, when I cried in silence…
But I also smile because it happened and nothing will erase that never…
Posted by: nodnoly on August 26, 2005 at 01:10 PMI like to think that it is life’s moments that matter, not the years. So I wish you many happy moments to come.
(And non-sick birthdays)
