Photoroam: Where Green Fields Are Drenched in Asphalt

Because it still doesn’t feel like autumn, Martin, Opal and I went to the place that was once called Columbia Lake. It should not longer be called that: someone drained the lake and covered most of the nearby hills with asphalt and glass. So instead of the wilderness I expected, the three of us roamed between the dozens of high-tech buildings that sprung out of nothingness.
Everything was shining brightly. Even the dark, fresh asphalt, had a way of sparkling in the sunlight, and Opal started doing cartwheels in the new parking lots. “The asphalt looks so fresh you can almost taste it,” I said. Urban sprawl is a wonderfully photogenic thing — just look at all the pretty pictures we’ve got (much better than photographing trees):
