Scenes From The City: Cops and Cabs

November 15, 2005

They tried to maim me like this:

Night. Rain. At midnight London’s streets are wrapped in long slivers of wet light, pieces of fabric stolen from dreams. The bars are open and ten thousand boys and girls descend upon the city to fuck. Noise. Commotion. Cops. Cabs. On busy nights, you’ll see at least three paddywagons parked outside popular bars: “Go directly to Jail,” they say. “Do not pass GO.”

I wasn’t there to party. I was exhausted after finishing work, so I got on my bike and glided home through the drenched streets. I was drifting through an intersection, my light green, when a black cab appeared out of nowhere and ever so gently bumped right into me.

I believe I screamed like a little girl when the metal of my bike scraped that front bumper. My muscles tensed on the handlebar and the pavement seemed so close, so hard, so wet. Yet somehow, somehow, the cab stopped before completely demolishing me, and like a tight-rope walker I regained my balance and continued to drift through the rain, my body shaken with fear.

jeebus, that’s frightening — good to hear you made it; when car meets bike, it’s not pretty — next time leave them with a dent in their car (it scares them into paying attention, and it helps release some of the mortaljitters)

i’m glad you’re okay - london can be a dangerous place!

Did the cabbie slide into the intersection or was he running a red?

Regardless… yowch. I’d have been screaming too. I’m glad to hear that you’re okay.

Darky, rainy November nights suck. That’s my official comment on THAT topic.

The cabbie was doing a right-hand turn on a red, so he figured it would be all right to do a rolling stop right into me. Asshole.

Wait a second. The cabbie turned right INTO you?
Good lord. Okay. I don’t feel so dumb about yesterday anymore. That totally one-ups my stupidity.

Yoiks. Yes, a boot to the front headlight was definitely in order… and not unheard of either. A couple people that I know have had that happen and got their not-so-subtle revenge in just that manner.
