Dave Propaganda
January 19, 2006
Dave is running for Students’ Union president because he has all the right qualities, like tact. “Yeah. You can go ahead and make me a website if you want,” he told me in an email yesterday. “My main colours are red and blue.”
Luckily, I was feeling particularly productive, so I decided to give into his crazed demands. “Gee. Thanks.” I said.
So this morning, after fumbling with my scanner for hours, I clobbered together a website which is definitely neither red nor blue. But if feels organic. So I like it.
You should now go listen to Dave. He has ideas.
Posted by Tudor at 11:32 PM in Technology | TrackBackLooks nice. Should be a good forum for Dave to go off on long-winded, poorly researched tirades.
One thing that bugs me: I get an illegibility alert from my eyes when I try to read the words underneath the “Polaroids.” It’s like the font is incompatible with my view of reality. There are plenty of other handwriting-esque fonts that don’t look like the deranged scrawlings of a mathematical genius who will one day kill his father.
The photos you selected do a great job of illustrating Dave’s esoteric tastes in shirts.

tudor (and regan since you seem not shy in sharing your critiques — and anyone else for that matter) — i have this website i’m working on and i’m not entirely satisfied with the design, but i can’t put my finger on it — any criticisms/comments would be more than welcome

Posted by: karen on January 20, 2006 at 02:47 AMYour main text font is illegible.
Posted by: corwin on January 20, 2006 at 03:54 AMI fully agree about the font. the previous font was too girly, sra and i decided. thus, we went for something more muscular (and you do need to be muscular to write on a polaroid with a ballpoint pen).
I changed it just now to something more manageable. I welcome further font suggestions, though!
Posted by: Tudor on January 20, 2006 at 10:15 AMkaren, i agree with corwin. wonky fonts are ok for titles (in moderation) but you need something orthodox for body text.
Posted by: regan on January 20, 2006 at 12:18 PMKeren, I like the fact that the site looks nice and compact right now. but what happens if the text on a page expands for several paragraphs? unless you use nasty iframes, you’ll have to expand the page and the background is not going to scale properly.
personally i would prefer a white background that can grow vertically as needed. the plants in the margin are really good visually. i would keep them but adjust them somehow to allow the page to grow. try the CSSZenGarden for some ideas of how to make that happen.
Posted by: Tudor on January 20, 2006 at 12:30 PMregan/corwin — you’re right, i just hate using more than two kinds of font and i was trying to cheat the system, but i knew that crazy font would be illegible…alas
tudor — i worried about that — unfortunately, my knowledge of css is shitty at best, but thanks for tip
merci!
Posted by: karen on January 20, 2006 at 04:45 PMAlways good to see Canada’s youth taking an interest in the bleek, miserable world my generation left you. Best of luck to you, Mr. Alexander!
Posted by: Jack Layton on January 20, 2006 at 06:06 PMJack! Did you get my letter??
Posted by: David Alexander on January 21, 2006 at 01:30 PMYes son, we did! Olivia and I both agree your plan will work wonders for the WLU community! And, oh ya, don’t forget to vote tomorrow! Each voice does matter in a democracy. ;)
Posted by: Jack Layton on January 21, 2006 at 02:28 PMyou’d think our dear friend jack would have a better idea of when people should be voting, since he would like us to vote for him and his colleagues… *wink*
Posted by: allipato on January 21, 2006 at 11:13 PMI’d replace the last pic of him along the top where he is a green shirt, it looks out of place and too hippie and that pirg post can only hurt him not help him get elected.
Posted by: deandean on January 22, 2006 at 03:56 PMreplace it, but with what? that is the question. there are few photos of dave where he doesn’t look like a hippie. i selected that photo because it takes place in a political context (last year’s election) and aside from the awesome beard he looks very much like a politician.
as for the pirg post, dave is talking with his political base, which is probably a good move. The post will fall off the page as new ones are added each day.
Posted by: Tudor on January 22, 2006 at 04:17 PMThat’s a really sexy web page… and you obviously found the ‘cream of the crop’ from the flickr web group to populate it with as well(:
