The Future Will Consist of Lofts And Rich Pricks
April 18, 2006
Attila and I crept up the stairs of the old Bauer factory with our cameras shaking slightly in our hands. Trespassing is exhilarating, especially when you get to see industrial settings being ripped apart to accommodate luxury lofts.
We hesitantly opened a door to encounter no construction workers or security guards on the first floor of the building. Thus, we grew bolder.
The floors beneath us creaked awkwardly and the rooms were vast and smelt like too much dust. Our shutters snapped endlessly, trying to capture the sunset streaming through the layers of coloured glass, the birds flapping their wings against the windows, and the rooftop that allowed us to see the whole world.
Everything was vibrant with colour and life.

“EMPLOYEES USING ROOF WITHOUT PERMISSION ARE SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL”
Ah, the sound of an institution. It remains comforting and unchanged.
Posted by: just another paul on April 19, 2006 at 10:14 AMThat sign is particularly sinister. The worst thing about it is its suggestion that you have freedom (i.e. “it’s OK to use the roof as long as you have our permission”). In other words, it makes it sound as though all you have to say is, “Hey, mind if I use the roof for a smoke?” and nobody would have any reason to say object.
However, I suspect that even the request for permission will be met with immediate dismissal. That’s why institutional signs are instruments of torture.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog, fin :)
