Puppies in the Boat!

September 17, 2007

Not only did Laura made me fantastic t-shirts and grab my ass for my birthday, but she also said “Hey, let’s go on a canoe ride!”

I said, “Sweet,” we picked a day on the calendar, and last Saturday we ended in Paris with paddles in our hands and an excited puppy in our arms. A big, yellow school bus took us upstream to Glen Morris; our puppy spent the entire ride wiggling out of her seat.

“Has the dog ever been in a Canoe?” someone asked.

“Sure,” we lied. “Lots of times. She loves it.” We didn’t want our adventure to end prematurely.

They believed us and helped us drag a canoe down to the river. We threw the puppy inside, and she was remarkably good. For about 10 seconds. At which point she started wiggling like crazy again, trying to paw her way out of the canoe. She rushed from stern to bow, tipping the canoe first one way, then the other.

We screamed like girls for a while. Then we grabbed the dog, and threw her in the water. She seemed surprisingly happy about this development. For the next 3 hours, the puppy swam and ran alongside the boat. She’s a strange and determined water creature.

Near the end of the trip, we scooped her up and put her in the canoe again. She simply collapsed at the bottom of the boat and went on to dream happy puppy dreams for the rest of the ride.

Was that the canoe the grand place?

We went through Grand Experiences in Paris. I think there’s another outlet in Kitchener that organizes similar trips … I forget their name.

It was fun.

Was it your first time canoing? how soar was it to your arms and such. Tip the canoe? I’m just curious, I want to go but I never had before and I suck at swimming, I think I’d be good at drowning

Canoe the Grand is the Kitchener one, I thought it was the only one around. I was just double checking

I went canoeing down the Saugeen and down the Maitland last year. Those were long canoe rides (over 8 hours at a time), and consequently I was totally exhausted by the end.

By comparison, the trip down the Grand was easy and fun. The river is pretty fast so you don’t even have to paddle much.

And the canoe is pretty safe — we didn’t tip (and besides, they give you life jackets), so no drowning
