Icy Erie

January 25, 2009

Every winter the dog and I go on a road trip to lake Erie. Last winter started off mildly, so by the time we made it to the lake right after Christmas the waters were still unfrozen (bummer). But we did find a dead deer on the beach (bonus!).

This year, we waited until the temperatures dipped ferociously for a couple of weeks. And yesterday, on a clear, brisk (-22 with windchill) winter day, we drove to the lake to find a thick layer of ice stretching for miles into the distance. The lake was a surreal — a crumpled mess of frozen waves and anguish followed right below the horizon by a deeper shade of blue where the waters were still unfrozen.

It was breathtaking. Literally. Chilly air has that sort of effect. But everything was so bright and the dog was so happy to run on the ice, that we ran off into the distance and did a little naked dance. It was pretty great:

So, the mission was a success — balls solidly frozen …

Wonderful! Where did you go on lake Erie? I did a bike trip this past summer along the shore from Rock Point to Long Point..fantastic stuff.

I think Erie might be my new favourite great lake..though I’ve always had a thing for Superior ‘cause it’s badass.

Hiya! We went to John E. Pearce provincial park, which has to be one of my favourite places along Lake Erie. The beach is desolate most of the year, and the dog just loves to run around:
